Akpokavie’s Persistence Pays Off with Historic GOC Presidential Victory

Richard Akpokavie made headlines after his resounding victory in the Ghana Olympic Committee (GOC) presidential election, not only for securing the top position but also for the powerful message of unity he shared following the election results.

Akpokavie triumphed with a commanding 44 votes, defeating his rival, Michael Aggrey, who received 19 votes.

This victory marks a remarkable comeback for Akpokavie, who narrowly lost the GOC presidency in 2021 by just seven votes to the then-incumbent, Ben Nunoo Mensah.

With his extensive leadership experience within the GOC having served as General Secretary from 2017 to 2021 Akpokavie’s persistence has paid off. His election victory reflects his dedication to reshaping Ghana’s sports landscape.

He is the first Ghanaian to be appointed as an arbitrator on the International Council of Arbitration for Sport (ICAS), the governing body of the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS).

Following his win, Akpokavie emphasized the need for unity within the country’s sports fraternity.

“The last four years have been tough. I lost, went back, prepared, and returned — and it’s been hard work from day one,” he said. “One of my primary goals has always been to promote gender inclusivity, ensuring both females and males have equal opportunities in our sporting fraternity. We must unite and work together to achieve our collective goals, rather than allow disputes to divide us.”

Akpokavie’s call for unity and inclusivity resonates deeply within Ghana’s sports community, as he looks to bring stakeholders together to focus on shared goals, growth, and progress.
