The Bishop of Accra, Rt Rev’d Dr. Daniel S.M. Torto, has expressed concern that illegal mining activities, commonly known as Galamsey, continue to persist in Ghana despite numerous pleas from citizens to address this issue.
He referenced a quote from Chief Seattle, a Native American leader, stating, “We do not inherit the Earth from our Ancestors; we borrow it from our children.” For the sake of future generations—both those born and unborn—it is crucial that we protect our environment, including our mineral resources and water bodies.
Bishop Torto called on the authorities to take more robust actions to completely eradicate the illegal mining crisis in our communities. He urged the Parliament of Ghana to pass a legislative measure that would ban all forms of mining in our forest reserves and water bodies.
These remarks were made during the opening of the Twenty-fifth Synod of the Anglican Diocese of Accra at St. Joseph the Worker Anglican Church in Kaneshie.
