Minister in Charge of Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, has stated that the GH₵1-per-litre Energy Sector Shortfall and Debt Repayment Levy has been effectively utilised and has played a key role in stabilising Ghana’s electricity supply.
The levy, which was introduced to generate additional funds for fuel purchases for thermal power plants and to clear outstanding debts within the energy sector, has attracted calls from stakeholders for greater transparency. Government, however, maintains that the proceeds have been put to appropriate use and have contributed to improved reliability in power supply nationwide.
Speaking at the Government Accountability Series in Accra on Wednesday, January 14, Mr. Kwakye Ofosu recalled that the power sector was facing significant stability challenges when the current administration took office.
According to him, the situation has improved considerably, offering reassurance to consumers and businesses alike.
“What is clear is that the levy has certainly been put to good use and has contributed significantly to achieving stability in the power sector,” he said.
“When we took over, there were challenges with electricity stability, and I think all of us can attest that for several months now, electricity has been stable. We have not experienced the outages that many had feared would occur,” he added.
