Allied Health Workers Halt Strike at Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital

Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital, Ghana largest referral centre, has been faced with severe operational disruption leading to members of the unit threatening a “sit down strike.”

The workers of the facility has been demanding payments of salary arrears form 2023,safer working conditions, and a fundamental welfare of staff and management.

The strike which should have commenced yesterday 5th February
by the Korle-Bu chapter of the workers ‘Union (MELPWU) has been put on hold following interventions from the finance minister Casiel Ato Forson.

At the hospital’s examination centre Union representative expressed profound frustration.

Management’s consistent failure to settle arrears from 2023, alongside unresolved issues of safety and fair compensation, leaves the Labouary workers with no option than to go strike.

During this period, members are to refuse all outpatient departments (OPD) laboratory request. A skeleton staff Involving existing in patients will be at post.

In a move indicating readiness for a prolonged stoppage, the union has also directed that any sample requiring analysis beyond February 8 will not be accepted, effective winding down operations in advance.

The action threatens to halt non-emergency hospital function, delay diagnosis, positioned surgeries, and interrupted treatment plans across all departments, but now the strike has been halted.
