Wontumi Declares Bid for NPP National Chairmanship, Says Competence Matters More Than English

The Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, has officially declared his intention to contest for the position of National Chairman of the party.

Speaking to party faithful in the Western Region ahead of the NPP’s national executive elections scheduled for September 2026, Wontumi stressed that leadership should be assessed based on competence and results rather than proficiency in the English language.

Rejecting suggestions that language fluency should determine leadership capability, the outspoken party stalwart underscored his long-standing experience and track record within the NPP. He argued that his deep grassroots connections and strategic planning abilities position him as the right candidate to lead the party into the 2028 general elections.

“Don’t judge me by my English. Judge me by my competence. Don’t judge me by how I speak English; judge me by what I have done and what I can do. Judge me by the strategies I can put in place to win the 2028 elections. After all, when I go to the markets to campaign, it is not English I will speak because the market women don’t speak English,” he stated.

Wontumi further urged party members to focus on practical leadership qualities and measurable achievements rather than what he described as superficial benchmarks.

The NPP has already commenced its internal reorganisation process, with a nationwide member registration exercise scheduled to run from March 1 to March 31, ahead of the crucial September 2026 national executive elections.

The upcoming contest is expected to shape the party’s direction as it prepares for the 2028 general elections.
