Ghanaian UN Peacekeeping Base in Lebanon Hit by Missile; Two Soldiers Critically Injured

The Ghanaian Battalion Headquarters serving with the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) has come under missile attack amid rising tensions between the Israel Defense Forces and the Lebanese militant group Hezbollah in southern Lebanon.

In a statement issued on Friday, March 6, the Ghana Armed Forces said the base was struck between 17:45 and 17:52 local time.

According to the military, two Ghanaian soldiers sustained critical injuries, while another officer suffered psychological trauma during the attack. The strike also caused significant damage to the facility, completely destroying the camp’s Officers’ Mess, which was burnt down.

“The injured personnel are receiving treatment at the Level One Medical Bunker and are currently stable. Arrangements are being made for their evacuation to the UNIFIL Headquarters Referral Hospital for further care,” the statement said.

The military further reassured Ghanaians that all other troops remain safe, noting that personnel quickly moved into underground bunkers due to the volatile security situation in the area.

Meanwhile, the Government of Ghana, through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, has lodged a formal protest at the United Nations headquarters in New York City.

The government is urging all parties operating within the UNIFIL mission area to respect their obligations under international law and ensure the protection of peacekeeping personnel.

Tensions have recently escalated in southern Lebanon following renewed exchanges between Israeli forces and Hezbollah, raising concerns over the safety of peacekeeping troops deployed in the region.
