The Minister for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovation, Sam Nartey George, has reaffirmed that the Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill remains a key national priority, despite concerns that it is not among Ghana’s most urgent challenges.
Speaking in an interview, the Ningo-Prampram MP argued that government has the capacity to address multiple issues simultaneously, stressing that the controversial legislation forms part of the mandate given to him by his constituents.
“This is a priority for us. Any country worth its salt can deal with multiple priorities at the same time,” he said.
Balancing Development and Legislation
Mr George noted that ongoing efforts to improve infrastructure and social services do not diminish the importance of the bill.
“We are dealing with our roads, our hospitals, our schools, our water. We will also deal with our family values,” he stated.
Constituents Back the Bill
According to him, residents of Ningo-Prampram strongly support the legislation and reaffirmed that backing during the 2024 parliamentary elections.
He revealed that his vote share increased from 69% to 74%, which he partly attributes to his firm stance on the bill.
Mr George added that his constituents expect him to return to Parliament and ensure the passage of the legislation.
Contrasting View from the Presidency
His comments follow remarks attributed to President John Dramani Mahama, who reportedly told civil society organisations during a March 30 meeting at Jubilee House that while the bill is important, it is not currently among the country’s most pressing priorities.
Ongoing National Debate
The Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill widely referred to as the anti-LGBTQ+ bill has sparked intense national and international debate.
While it has garnered support from some lawmakers and religious groups, it has also faced criticism from human rights advocates and sections of the international community.
Still High on Legislative Agenda
Mr George maintained that the bill will remain a major focus alongside other development efforts, including road construction, healthcare expansion, education infrastructure, and water supply improvements.
“So it remains a priority,” he emphasised.
