Flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Mahamudu Bawumia, has begun engaging his former opponents in the party’s presidential primaries, including Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, as part of efforts to reposition the party for the 2028 general elections.
The move was disclosed by Sammi Awuku, Member of Parliament for Akuapem North and a senior aide, during an interview on Peace FM.
According to him, the outreach is part of a broader strategy to foster unity within the party after a highly competitive primary.
Dr. Bawumia was re-elected on January 31, 2026, to lead the NPP into the 2028 elections, defeating Kwabena Agyepong, Yaw Osei Adutwum, and Bryan Acheampong, among others.
Despite the outcome being widely accepted, the intensity of the contest raised concerns about internal divisions and the need to rebuild cohesion ahead of the next electoral cycle.
Sammi Awuku revealed that Dr. Bawumia has already held a private meeting with Kennedy Agyapong, describing the engagement as constructive and focused on the future of the party.
“He has made a personal visit to his brother Kennedy Agyapong. They had extensive discussions on how the party can unite after the primaries ahead of 2028,” he said.
Awuku added that Dr. Bawumia left the meeting satisfied, with assurances of support from Agyapong.
He further indicated that similar engagements have been held with the other former contenders, all of whom have expressed willingness to back the flagbearer.
The initiative, he noted, is aimed at consolidating party unity and strengthening the NPP’s chances in the 2028 general elections.
