Black Lawmakers Worldwide Unite in Historic Show of Support for UN Permanent Forum on People of African Descent

Story by Voice of Africa

A historic coalition of Black parliamentary leaders from across the United States, Europe, and beyond has issued a unified statement backing the work of the United Nations Permanent Forum on People of African Descent, marking a significant moment in global political alignment around racial justice and equity.

The joint declaration, led by the Congressional Black Caucus under Chair Yvette D. Clarke, represents what organizers describe as a first-of-its-kind collaboration—bringing together Black lawmakers across continents under a shared agenda of advancing justice, dignity, and opportunity for people of African descent.

A Global Political Alignment

Delivered ahead of the Forum’s Fifth Session in Geneva, the statement underscores a growing transnational movement among Black political leaders to coordinate policy, advocacy, and legislative action.

From members of the U.S. Congress to parliamentarians in the United Kingdom, Canada, and Switzerland, the coalition reflects an expanding network of leadership focused on addressing systemic inequities rooted in slavery, colonialism, and structural discrimination.

The lawmakers emphasized that while national contexts may differ, the historical and contemporary challenges facing people of African descent remain interconnected—and require coordinated global responses.

Elevating the Role of the UN Forum

At the center of the statement is strong support for the Permanent Forum as a critical institution shaping global dialogue and policy.

Leaders described the Forum as:

  • A platform for evidence-based policy development
  • A space for international collaboration and strategy
  • A key driver of global awareness around racial justice

They also pointed to the extension of the International Decade for People of African Descent as a clear signal of rising global momentum behind these efforts.

From Dialogue to Action

Beyond symbolic alignment, the coalition outlined a clear set of commitments aimed at translating global dialogue into measurable outcomes at the national level.

These include:

  • Advancing legislation informed by the Forum’s research
  • Supporting policies that uplift communities of African descent
  • Strengthening partnerships with civil society
  • Expanding coordination among Black lawmakers globally

This shift toward action signals a more structured and policy-driven phase of international cooperation.

A Moment of Strategic Importance

The joint statement comes at a time of increasing global focus on racial equity, reparatory justice, and inclusive development.

Lawmakers framed their unity as a strategic response to persistent inequalities and a recognition that collective political power is essential to driving systemic change.

“At a time marked by global uncertainty and persistent inequality, our unity remains our greatest strength,” the statement noted.

Looking Ahead

With participation spanning multiple continents and levels of government, the initiative positions the Permanent Forum as a central hub connecting policymakers, institutions, and communities.

For the Congressional Black Caucus and its international partners, the message is clear:
global coordination among Black leaders is no longer aspirational—it is actively taking shape.

As the Fifth Session convenes, this unprecedented alignment signals a new phase in international cooperation—one focused not only on dialogue, but on delivering tangible progress for people of African descent worldwide.
