The Minister for Energy and Green Transition, John Jinapor, has announced that two power generation units have been successfully restored following disruptions caused by the recent fire outbreak at the Ghana Grid Company (GRIDCo) Akosombo Substation.
The fire, which severely damaged the facility’s control room, significantly affected electricity transmission and reduced power evacuation capacity, leading to concerns over unstable power supply across the country.
Providing an update during the Government Accountability Series on Monday, April 27, the Minister described the restoration as a key step toward stabilising the national grid. He explained that emergency technical interventions made it possible to bring the affected units back online.
“Through emergency technical interventions, the first-generation unit was successfully restored yesterday. This afternoon, I received confirmation that the second unit has also been brought on and is generating power. The third unit is undergoing works and will be brought on as soon as possible,” he stated.
Mr. Jinapor added that engineers are working around the clock to fully restore operational capacity, with additional units expected to come back online in the coming days to further strengthen system stability.
