ECG Blames Weak Cables for Ongoing Power Outages, Rolls Out Nationwide Upgrade Programme

The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has acknowledged ongoing unplanned power outages affecting parts of the country, attributing the disruptions to challenges within its distribution network.

According to the company, the outages are largely being caused by ageing infrastructure, deteriorating cables, and overloaded transformers, all of which continue to put pressure on the national electricity distribution system.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, April 28, ECG indicated that efforts are underway to address the situation through a major nationwide intervention being implemented in collaboration with the government. The initiative, known as the Transformer Upgrade and Replacement Programme (TURP), is being rolled out in phases across the company’s operational areas.

As part of the programme, more than 2,500 transformers are expected to be installed nationwide to enhance capacity and improve the reliability of power supply. ECG noted that while installation works continue, some planned outages may occur, with advance notice to be given to affected communities.

The company assured customers that its technical teams are actively working to restore power in affected areas and reduce the impact of the disruptions.

ECG also apologised for the inconvenience caused and appealed for patience and understanding as repair and upgrade works continue.

“We sincerely apologise for the inconvenience and kindly ask for the patience of affected customers. Our teams are working diligently to reach all affected areas,” the statement said.

Customers experiencing unplanned outages have been encouraged to report incidents through the ECG hotline on 0302611611 for prompt assistance.

ECG reaffirmed its commitment to delivering a stable and reliable electricity supply nationwide, noting that the ongoing upgrades are essential to strengthening the country’s power distribution network.
