Eight Teachers, Invigilators Convicted Over 2025 BECE Malpractice

Eight teachers and invigilators have been convicted and sentenced for their roles in examination malpractice during the 2025 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE), Minister for Education Haruna Iddrisu has revealed.

He disclosed this on Monday, May 4, during a visit to BECE centres in Sefwi Asawinso in the Western North Region, noting that the action forms part of intensified efforts by the Ghana Education Service (GES) and the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) to safeguard the credibility of national exams.

According to the Minister, the offenders were found to have aided cheating and have since faced legal consequences, including removal from the GES payroll.

Mr Iddrisu also raised concern about the increasing incidence of exam malpractice, indicating that 178 candidates were implicated in the 2025 BECE. This resulted in some examination scripts being withheld, while others were cancelled entirely.

He urged candidates to uphold honesty and integrity, stressing that such values are essential to responsible citizenship and national development.

The Minister further cautioned invigilators to maintain strict ethical standards, warning that any misconduct would attract severe sanctions.

He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to ensuring transparent and credible examinations and called on all stakeholders to treat the process with utmost seriousness.
