Residents of Weija Gbawe Protest Over Delayed Commissioning of Children’s Hospital

Hundreds of aggrieved residents in Weija Gbawe took to the streets in protest, accusing President John Dramani Mahama of neglecting a children’s hospital project in the area.

The demonstrators expressed frustration that the facility—reportedly completed and equipped with what they described as “state-of-the-art” medical equipment—remains unused. They argued that the project has been left idle since the tenure of former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.

Carrying placards and chanting slogans, protesters questioned why such a vital healthcare facility has been left to deteriorate while children in the community continue to face inadequate medical care. “Why allow a critical hospital to lie waste while our children suffer?” one protester asked.

Another resident highlighted the consequences of the delay, alleging that patients are being turned away from existing facilities due to a shortage of hospital beds, sometimes resulting in preventable deaths.

“People are being turned away because there are no beds, and some die in the process. So why should this one remain unused simply because it has not been commissioned?” the resident queried.

The protest, which drew more than a thousand participants, caused traffic disruptions in parts of the municipality as residents called for immediate government action.

The situation underscores growing public concern over the underutilization of completed public infrastructure, particularly in the healthcare sector, where delays can have life-or-death implications.
