First Batch of Ghanaian Pilgrims Arrives Safely in Mecca for Hajj

The first group of Ghanaian Muslims undertaking this year’s Hajj pilgrimage has safely arrived in Mecca after departing from Tamale at approximately 11:30 a.m. on Friday, May 1, 2026.

As of May 6, a total of five batches of pilgrims have departed Tamale for Saudi Arabia to participate in the annual religious rites.

In all, about 6,000 Ghanaian pilgrims are expected to travel for Hajj this year, with 18 scheduled flights set to operate between May 1 and May 18, 2026.

Mohammed Amin Lamptey, Director of Communication for the Pilgrims Affairs Office of Ghana (PAOG), confirmed that members of the first batch are in good health and have encountered no challenges during their journey.

He attributed the smooth travel process to effective measures put in place by authorities to ensure the safety and wellbeing of the pilgrims.

Lamptey also reassured families in Ghana of the welfare of their relatives, noting that comprehensive arrangements have been made to support pilgrims throughout their stay.

He added that an advance team had already been deployed to Saudi Arabia to receive the pilgrims in both Medina and Mecca.

“This year, we have enhanced our communication systems to ensure that sensitive information is handled accurately and shared appropriately,” he said.
