AG’s Office Rejects Claims of Blocking Legal Access in Hanan Abdul-Wahab Case

Deputy Attorney-General Justice Srem-Sai has dismissed allegations by former Attorney-General Godfred Dame that former National Food and Buffer Stock Company (NAFCO) Chief Executive Officer Hanan Abdul-Wahab was denied access to legal representation following his re-arrest.

Speaking to journalists at the High Court in Accra on Thursday, May 7, Justice Srem-Sai described the allegations as baseless and misleading.

He further criticised Mr Dame, accusing him of sidestepping established legal procedures in favour of public commentary on the issue.

According to the Deputy Attorney-General, engaging the media rather than directly addressing concerns with officials of the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) risks creating public misunderstanding about due process and undermining confidence in institutional mechanisms for resolving legal disputes.

The remarks come amid ongoing concerns raised by lawyers representing Hanan Abdul-Wahab and his wife, Faiza Sayyid Wuni, who claim they have been unable to reach their clients more than 24 hours after their re-arrest by EOCO officials.

The couple, together with other accused persons, were re-arrested shortly after the Office of the Attorney-General withdrew all charges against them, citing the emergence of fresh evidence.

However, the defence team, led by Godfred Dame, maintains that they have been denied access to the accused persons.

According to the lawyers, junior members of the legal team who visited EOCO offices were still unable to meet their clients as of late Wednesday night.
