Ghana Petitions AU Over Xenophobic Attacks in South Africa

Ghana has formally petitioned the African Union (AU) to place the issue of xenophobic attacks against African nationals in South Africa on the agenda of the Eighth Mid-Year Coordination Meeting scheduled for June 24 to 27, 2026, in El Alamein, Egypt.

In a diplomatic communication addressed to the Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Ghana described the matter as one of “urgent continental interest” requiring collective African action.

The letter, signed by Ghana’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, expressed deep concern over recurring xenophobic incidents in South Africa, which it said have resulted in loss of lives, destruction of businesses and investments, and threats to the safety and wellbeing of African migrants.

The Minister stressed that the continued attacks undermine the spirit of Pan-Africanism and continental integration, calling for a unified response from the AU to address the root causes of the violence and prevent future occurrences.

Ghana’s petition is expected to strengthen growing calls from several African countries for a decisive AU-led framework aimed at protecting African nationals across the continent, while reaffirming the Union’s principles of unity, solidarity, and shared prosperity.
