Tennis Stars Warn of Possible Boycott Over Revenue Sharing Dispute Ahead of French Open

A growing dispute over revenue sharing in professional tennis could lead to a boycott of major tournaments, with the 2026 French Open potentially the first to be affected.

Top players, including Women’s World No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka and Coco Gauff, have publicly expressed dissatisfaction with the current distribution of tournament revenues between organisers and players.

This year’s French Open is set to offer a total prize pool of $72 million, an increase of $6.2 million from the previous edition. However, players are reportedly demanding a larger share of overall tournament revenues, pushing for 22% instead of the current 15%.

Speaking on the issue, Coco Gauff suggested that collective action, including a potential boycott, may eventually become necessary if negotiations fail.

“I think at some point we will boycott it, yeah. I feel like that’s going to be the only way to fight for our rights. Let’s see how far we can get… Some of the things, I feel like it’s really unfair to the players,” she said.

Gauff is the defending women’s champion of the French Open.

In the men’s division, Carlos Alcaraz is the reigning champion but is expected to miss this year’s tournament due to injury.

The dispute highlights ongoing tensions in professional tennis over prize money distribution and players’ share of tournament-generated revenues, with concerns that the issue could escalate further if no agreement is reached.
