Accra Mayor Orders Immediate End to Hawking Under Kwame Nkrumah Interchange

The Mayor of Accra, Michael Kpakpo Allotey, has directed the immediate cessation of all hawking, trading and other unauthorised activities beneath the Kwame Nkrumah Interchange, warning that violators will face arrest and prosecution.

The directive was issued on Tuesday, June 16, during a working visit to the Okaikoi South Sub-Metropolitan District, where the Mayor led a team from the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) on an inspection tour to assess sanitation conditions, compliance with building permit regulations and the enforcement of Assembly by-laws.

As part of the exercise, AMA officials cleared food vendors, beggars and individuals who had been sleeping beneath the Korle Klottey section of the interchange. The operation also targeted makeshift structures and other unauthorised activities occupying portions of the facility.

Addressing traders and residents in the area, Mr. Allotey emphasised that the space under the interchange was not designated for commercial activities, food vending, habitation or any other unauthorised use.

“The Assembly will no longer tolerate the use of the area under the interchange for trading or other illegal activities. Anyone found engaging in such activities will be dealt with according to the law,” the Mayor stated.

According to him, the enforcement exercise forms part of the AMA’s broader efforts to improve sanitation, enhance public safety and restore order across the capital.

The inspection team also demolished illegal wooden structures erected along the shoulder of Otublohum Road near the Circle VIP Station. Mr. Allotey noted that such structures contribute to congestion, poor sanitation and the obstruction of public spaces.

In addition, he directed owners of drinking spots, managers of the VIP Station and cattle owners operating along Otublohum Road to clear and desilt choked gutters within 24 hours or face sanctions from the Assembly.

The Mayor reiterated the AMA’s commitment to strictly enforcing regulations relating to sanitation, building permits and public order. He further urged residents, traders and business operators to cooperate with authorities in efforts to maintain a clean, safe and orderly city.

The latest enforcement action is part of ongoing measures by the Assembly to reclaim public spaces and address sanitation challenges in Accra.
