The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has announced that it will submit petitions to the Supreme Court, the Presidency and Parliament during its planned nationwide demonstration dubbed “Democracy Under Attack” on Thursday, August 6.
At a press conference on Wednesday, August 5, the party outlined the route and activities for the protest, which it says is aimed at drawing attention to concerns about Ghana’s democratic and judicial institutions.
Speaking to journalists, the NPP’s National Organiser, Henry Nana Boakye, said participants are expected to begin assembling from 5:00 a.m. at the Community Centre opposite the Supreme Court.
He explained that the first petition will be presented to the Supreme Court before demonstrators proceed along the Mövenpick Ambassador Hotel road, through the Efua Sutherland Ridge Roundabout and the Ako-Adjei Interchange, before ending at the main entrance of Jubilee House, where a second petition will be presented to the President.
Mr. Boakye further disclosed that a separate delegation, made up of the party’s parliamentary leadership and selected party elders, will deliver a third petition to Parliament.
He noted that the Ghana Police Service has been officially notified of the demonstration and has agreed on the designated route with the organisers.
“The Ghana Police has been duly notified of this demonstration. We have had meetings with them, we have agreed on the routes and they have assured us they are going to provide security,” he said.
According to the NPP, the protest is intended to be peaceful and is not designed to create disorder. Instead, the party says it is appealing to constitutional office holders and state institutions to uphold the principles of justice, fairness, impartiality, accountability, due process and institutional independence.
The demonstration forms part of the NPP’s broader nationwide campaign protesting what it describes as actions that threaten Ghana’s democratic governance and the independence of its judicial institutions.
