Flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, has declared that the party’s primary objective is to regain political power from the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the 2028 general elections.
Dr Bawumia said the party’s ongoing internal reorganisation is critical to rebuilding its structures, strengthening its grassroots base and positioning the party for victory in the next general election.
He made the remarks on Sunday, August 16, when he addressed newly elected Greater Accra Regional executives of the NPP following the party’s regional executive elections held on August 15.
The former Vice President urged the newly elected executives to fully commit themselves to the reorganisation process and work towards strengthening the party at all levels.
According to him, the regional elections form part of a broader restructuring exercise designed to create a stronger and more effective political organisation capable of winning the 2028 elections.
Dr Bawumia noted that the party had already completed elections at the polling station, electoral area and constituency levels, with the regional elections representing another key stage in the process.
“The goal for all of us is to win the 2028 election. This is just a stepping stone towards winning 2028,” he said.
He added that the reorganisation exercise would be completed with the party’s national elections scheduled for October 10.
“We will culminate that process on October 10 with the national elections and therefore, at the end of that, the party will be in a good position to have that vehicle that drives us to victory in 2028. So there is a lot of work ahead of us.”
Dr Bawumia further cautioned the newly elected executives against treating their election as merely a political achievement.
He said their new positions came with significant responsibilities, particularly the task of rebuilding the party, strengthening its structures and mobilising members ahead of the 2028 general elections.
The NPP flagbearer urged the executives to remain focused on the broader objective of repositioning the party and ensuring that the ongoing reorganisation translates into a stronger grassroots organisation capable of returning the party to power.
