FIFA hands Leandro Paredes 10-match ban over post-final clash

FIFA has sanctioned Argentina midfielder Leandro Paredes with a 10-match suspension and a $90,000 fine following incidents that occurred after the World Cup final between Argentina and Spain.

The punishment applies exclusively to Paredes’ appearances for the Argentina national team and will not affect his availability for Boca Juniors.

The FIFA Disciplinary Committee imposed the sanctions following clashes that broke out after the final whistle.

Paredes, who came through Boca Juniors’ youth system and currently captains the club, received one of the most severe punishments, with his 10-match suspension applying to official matches involving the Albiceleste.

Other players were also sanctioned over the post-match incidents. Argentina defender Nahuel Molina received a seven-match ban, while Thiago Almada and Roberto Ayala were also punished. Spain midfielder Pablo Gavi was handed a one-match suspension.

The ruling means Paredes remains eligible to represent Boca Juniors in domestic and international club competitions despite his national-team suspension.

Paredes remains sidelined with injury

Although he is free to play for Boca, Paredes is currently unavailable due to a muscle injury sustained during the club’s match against Platense in the Torneo Clausura.

The injury forced him to miss Boca’s Copa Sudamericana return leg against Recoleta in Paraguay.

He is also expected to miss the domestic league fixture against Racing, with the midfielder targeting a return against Lanús.

The Lanús match could also mark Paredes’ return to La Bombonera after Boca were forced to play their home fixtures at the Ducó.
