Afenyo-Markin Sues Sammy Gyamfi, Eric Adjei, Multimedia Group and Peace FM Over Alleged Defamatory Remarks

Minority Leader in Parliament, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has initiated legal proceedings against Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod) Chief Executive Officer, Sammy Gyamfi, over statements he says are false and defamatory.

The Effutu MP disclosed the lawsuit when Parliament resumed on Monday, August 24, 2026, following weeks of public exchanges between the two over GoldBod’s operations and reported losses linked to the Bank of Ghana’s Domestic Gold Purchase Programme (DGPP).

The dispute intensified after Mr Gyamfi described Mr Afenyo-Markin as an “extortionist” in response to the Minority Leader’s demands for accountability over the reported US$1.7 billion loss recorded by the Bank of Ghana in 2025 under the gold purchase programme.

Mr Afenyo-Markin said he had taken legal action against Mr Gyamfi as well as media organisations that published or broadcast the statements he considers defamatory.

“I have accordingly caused writs to be filed in Suit Number GT/1029/2026, titled Osahen Alexander Afenyo-Markin versus Samuel Adu Gyamfi and Multimedia Group Limited at the Accra High Court, and Suit Number GR/ACH/CC/C5/02/2026, titled Osahen Alexander Afenyo-Markin versus Eric Adjei and Peace FM at the Achimota Circuit Court,” he said.

He expressed confidence that the courts would resolve the matter based on the evidence presented and the applicable law.

“I have every confidence that in the fullness of time the court will make the appropriate determination,” he added.

The lawsuit follows a prolonged dispute between the Minority Leader and the GoldBod CEO over the financial performance of the DGPP and the extent of GoldBod’s involvement in the reported losses.

Mr Afenyo-Markin has repeatedly called on the government and GoldBod to account for the reported losses associated with the programme.

Mr Gyamfi, however, has rejected claims that GoldBod itself incurred the reported losses and has defended his earlier comments about the Minority Leader.

He has also indicated that he is prepared to defend the statements in court.
