The Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) has confirmed receiving three petitions concerning allegations of extortion and related conduct levelled against Minority Leader in Parliament, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, by Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod) Chief Executive Officer, Sammy Gyamfi.
The anti-corruption agency said one of the petitions was jointly filed by two individuals, while two others were submitted separately by different petitioners.
In a statement issued on Monday, August 24, 2026, the OSP said it had taken note of the allegations that have emerged publicly and would assess the petitions to establish whether the matter falls within its statutory mandate.
The Office said the assessment would also determine whether the circumstances warrant further investigative action.
The development follows allegations by Mr Gyamfi accusing Mr Afenyo-Markin of extortion amid a growing public dispute between the two over the operations of the Ghana Gold Board and the Bank of Ghana’s Domestic Gold Purchase Programme (DGPP).
Mr Afenyo-Markin has denied the allegations and indicated that he intends to pursue legal action over what he considers defamatory statements made against him.
The dispute has largely centred on claims of approximately GH¢22 billion in losses, equivalent to about US$1.7 billion, allegedly recorded under the Domestic Gold Purchase Programme in 2025.
Meanwhile, the United Party has also petitioned the Attorney-General and other anti-corruption and security institutions to investigate the extortion allegations against Mr Afenyo-Markin.
The party’s Communications Director, Solomon Owusu, and Legal Director, Andrew Appiah-Danquah, filed the petition.
The OSP’s review of the petitions will determine whether the allegations fall within its jurisdiction and whether any further action will be taken.
