The Appointments Committee of Parliament is expected to vet Dr. Zanetor Agyemang-Rawlings on Tuesday, August 25, following her nomination by President John Dramani Mahama to serve as Minister for Environment, Science and Technology.
Her vetting forms part of Parliament’s five-day emergency sitting, which was convened after the House was recalled from recess to address a number of urgent matters.
When Parliament resumed on Monday, August 24, Speaker Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin referred the President’s ministerial nominations to the Appointments Committee for scrutiny and approval.
The Committee is also scheduled to vet Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga, who has been nominated as Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs.
In addition, the Committee will consider the nominations of three Justices to the Supreme Court: Justice Sophia Rosetta Bernasko, Justice Edward Amoako Asante and Justice Anthony Forson Junior.
Explaining the basis for the emergency sitting, Speaker Bagbin said President Mahama, in a letter dated August 11, 2026, formally requested the recall of Parliament to deal with urgent national business ahead of the next scheduled recall in October.
According to the Speaker, one of the key matters before the House is the consideration and passage of the Banks and Specialised Deposit-Taking Institutions (Amendment) Bill, 2026.
The five-day sitting is scheduled to run until Friday, August 28.
Meanwhile, Speaker Bagbin clarified the status of Mahama Ayariga’s position as Majority Leader and Leader of Government Business.
He explained that despite Mr Ayariga’s nomination to the Cabinet, he remains Majority Leader until the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) formally communicates any change in leadership to Parliament.
The clarification means Mr Ayariga will continue to occupy his current leadership position in the House pending an official notification from the NDC.
