The Member of Parliament for Bosome-Freho and Deputy Ranking Member of Parliament’s Foreign Affairs Committee, Nana Asafo-Adjei Ayeh, has filed a Right to Information (RTI) request demanding detailed information on government expenditure related to the evacuation of Ghanaians from South Africa.
The request follows an August 13, 2026 statement by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, which indicated that the evacuation exercise was being fully financed by the Government of Ghana and “Ghanaian partners.”
According to the Ministry, more than 1,600 Ghanaian nationals had been evacuated from South Africa since May 2026, with the exercise still ongoing.
However, Nana Asafo-Adjei Ayeh said the Ministry did not provide details on the overall cost of the exercise, the sources of funding or the identities of the private entities referred to as “Ghanaian partners.”
The MP is therefore asking the Ministry to disclose the total amount spent from May 2026 to the date of his request, in both Ghana cedis and US dollars. He is also seeking a detailed breakdown of the expenditure, supported by documents such as invoices, payment vouchers, receipts, contracts, purchase orders and charter agreements.
He has further requested information on the sources of funding, including any money drawn from the Consolidated Fund, Contingency Fund, the Ministry’s 2026 budget allocation, supplementary appropriations or funds held by the Ghana High Commission in Pretoria.
The RTI request also seeks the names of all individuals, companies and institutions described by the Ministry as “Ghanaian partners,” together with details of their financial or other contributions and any agreements or arrangements entered into with them.
Nana Asafo-Adjei Ayeh is additionally seeking a comprehensive schedule of evacuation flights. The information requested includes flight dates, airlines or service providers, the number of evacuees transported, the cost of each operation and the procurement methods used.
The MP has also asked for details of reintegration support and transportation fares provided to evacuees, including the approved and actual amount paid per beneficiary, eligibility requirements and the total number of people who received such assistance.
Information on relief items distributed to evacuees is also being sought, including the quantities supplied, unit prices and the total expenditure incurred.
Nana Asafo-Adjei Ayeh said the request was made in the public interest, arguing that once the Ministry had publicly disclosed how the evacuation was funded, citizens should also have access to the financial records supporting the exercise.
He has requested that the information be provided electronically and that the Ministry process and determine the request within the statutory timeframe prescribed by the Right to Information Act, 2019 (Act 989).
