Supreme Court nominee Justice Edward Amoako Asante has called for any Artificial Intelligence (AI) system introduced into Ghana’s Judiciary to be specifically designed around the country’s legal and judicial framework.
Appearing before Parliament’s Appointments Committee, Justice Amoako Asante said an AI platform for the Judiciary should be built using Ghanaian laws, court procedures, judicial records and the operational needs of the Judicial Service.
He believes such a system would provide more reliable support to judges and legal practitioners in carrying out their responsibilities.
Justice Amoako Asante also proposed the development of a similar platform for Parliament, which could be integrated with the Judicial Service, the legal profession and other relevant state institutions.
He said the use of AI within these institutions could improve access to relevant legal and institutional information, provided the systems are properly designed and managed.
The Supreme Court nominee, however, cautioned against the risks associated with AI-generated inaccuracies and misleading information.
He said such concerns could be addressed through appropriate system design, adequate training and capacity building, as well as ensuring that AI tools rely on verified data from credible institutions.
Justice Amoako Asante further expressed his willingness to support any policy initiative by the Chief Justice aimed at incorporating AI technology into the operations of the courts.
Despite his support for the technology, he stressed that AI should complement, rather than replace, judges and lawyers.
According to him, the administration of justice depends on human reasoning, sound judgment and critical analysis, which cannot simply be substituted by artificial intelligence.
He therefore maintained that judges and legal practitioners would still have a responsibility to critically assess and verify information generated by AI before using it in legal proceedings or decision-making.
Justice Amoako Asante’s comments come amid growing discussions about the potential use of emerging technologies to improve efficiency and access to information within Ghana’s justice system and other public institutions.
