Ayariga Praises Afenyo-Markin Despite Political Differences

Minister-designate for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Mahama Ayariga, has spoken highly of Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin, describing their working relationship as cordial despite their positions on opposite sides of Parliament.

Mr Ayariga made the comments during his vetting before Parliament’s Appointments Committee on Thursday, August 27, 2026, after Mr Afenyo-Markin invited him to share his assessment of him.

The former Majority Leader said his approximately one-and-a-half years of working closely with Mr Afenyo-Markin gave him the opportunity to understand the Minority Leader beyond their political differences.

Mr Ayariga described Mr Afenyo-Markin as a person of integrity and honesty and expressed appreciation for the openness and straightforward manner with which he conducted their dealings.

He also acknowledged the Minority Leader’s resilience and determination in defending the position of the Minority Caucus, saying he does not easily give up.

Despite their political disagreements, Mr Ayariga said he genuinely valued Mr Afenyo-Markin’s friendship and enjoyed working with him.

He expressed hope that his successor as Majority Leader would establish a similarly constructive relationship with the Minority Leader.

The exchange between the two lawmakers highlighted a cordial side of parliamentary relations, showing that political differences can coexist with mutual respect and professional cooperation.
