Hundreds of residents at Asawase Pelele in the Asokore Mampong Municipality of the Ashanti Region have been left without shelter after a fire destroyed several makeshift wooden structures in the densely populated community.
The fire broke out in the early hours of Thursday, August 27, 2026, and quickly spread through the settlement, destroying structures mainly occupied by metal scrap dealers and head porters.
Several young mothers and men who had travelled from northern Ghana to the Ashanti Region in search of jobs are among those affected by the incident.
The tightly packed arrangement of the structures created major difficulties for firefighters, making it challenging for them to reach the affected areas and contain the blaze.
The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) received the emergency call at 6:03 a.m. and arrived at the scene about 14 minutes later.
Asokore Mampong Municipal Fire Commander, DO III Wikana Daniel, said the congestion in the area posed a significant challenge to the firefighting operation.
According to him, firefighters eventually brought the blaze under control at about 7:13 a.m., preventing it from spreading to other parts of the settlement.
Mr Daniel has urged members of the public to provide clear and accurate location details when reporting emergencies to help firefighters reach affected areas as quickly as possible.
The cause of the fire and the extent of the total damage are yet to be fully established.
