President John Dramani Mahama has announced that Ghana will convene a high-level side event during the 81st Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in September 2026, as the country intensifies efforts to promote the global campaign for reparatory justice for Africa and people of African descent.
The President disclosed this while addressing African leaders at the 21st Extraordinary Summit of the African Union (AU) in Luanda, Angola. He briefed the gathering on developments in the international reparations agenda and outlined the next steps Ghana plans to undertake in advancing the cause.
The proposed side event will bring together key stakeholders in the reparations campaign to provide updates on their respective areas of work and assess progress made since the initiative was launched in Accra.
According to President Mahama, the meeting will receive progress reports from the various panels established to implement and advance the work stemming from the reparations resolution adopted by the United Nations General Assembly in 2025.
The panels are tasked with providing expert knowledge and recommendations covering the political, legal, historical and cultural aspects of the reparations campaign.
The President also highlighted the high-level conference of African leaders and experts held in Accra in June 2026, during which he was named the African Union Champion for Reparations.
Reflecting on the outcome of the conference, President Mahama said Ghana had expanded the scope of its reparations agenda to include indentured labour as a historical injustice. The country also established a High-Level Advisory Council on Reparatory Justice, a Global Experts Panel on the Restitution of Cultural Heritage, and a Global Legal Panel on Reparatory Justice.
As part of the follow-up to these initiatives, President Mahama announced that Ghana will host the high-level side event during the 81st UN General Assembly in September to receive updates on the work of the various panels.
He has also invited Heads of State from across Africa and beyond to participate in the gathering as Ghana continues to champion efforts for justice, restitution and dignity for Africa and people of African descent worldwide.
