Ghanaian international Ibrahim Sulemana has completed a season-long loan switch to Sassuolo, with the Serie A club securing an option to make the move permanent at the end of the campaign.
The deal, confirmed by Atalanta, ties the 23-year-old midfielder to Sassuolo through to 30 June 2027 and marks yet another change of scenery for a player who has now represented five different clubs across five consecutive seasons.
Sulemana’s football journey began far from the top flight of Italian football, in his hometown of Sunyani.
It was there that he first took up the game before travelling to Italy for trials in 2019, a move that would alter the course of his career. Atalanta’s scouts were impressed enough to bring him into the club’s Under-17 setup, and after two years developing within the Bergamo club’s youth ranks, he was sent to gain further experience with Hellas Verona’s academy.
His progress at youth level was steady rather than spectacular: eighteen appearances, a single goal and three assists in the Under-19 championship were enough to convince Hellas Verona’s coaching staff to fast-track him into senior contention.
His first-team breakthrough arrived in the 2022/23 season, when he was handed his Serie A debut against Salernitana on 9 October.
Later that campaign, he played the full ninety minutes in the promotion-playoff fixture against Spezia at the Mapei Stadium, a result that ultimately kept the Scaligeri in Serie A.
A fixture on the transfer circuit before turning 24, Sulemana has yet to spend back-to-back seasons at the same club.That performance caught the attention of newly promoted Cagliari, who signed him in the summer of 2023.
He went on to make 24 appearances for the Rossoblu, opening his goalscoring account for the club in January. A year later, he returned to parent club Atalanta, where he added two further goals in nine appearances one of which proved decisive in confirming the Nerazzurri’s qualification for the Champions League.
The midfielder’s rapid movement between clubs continued into the following season. He joined Bologna on loan in September 2025 before switching to Cagliari in January, where he made sixteen appearances and scored once across the second half of the campaign, contributing to the Sardinian club’s comfortable top-flight survival.
That itinerant spell now gives way to a new chapter at Sassuolo, where he will look to establish the kind of sustained run in one shirt that has so far eluded him at senior level.
