The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) and the Ghana Road Transport Coordinating Council (GRTCC) have commenced steps towards a possible review of public transport fares.
In a joint statement, the two transport organisations disclosed that they have formally submitted a request to the Ministry of Transport, in line with the administrative procedures governing adjustments to transport fares.
The groups explained that the request is part of the established consultation process for determining and reviewing public transport fares, with consideration given to the various operational costs incurred by commercial road transport operators.
According to the transport bodies, discussions with the Ministry of Transport are expected to begin soon. Any decision regarding a possible adjustment to fares will be communicated to the public after the consultations have been concluded.
The GPRTU and GRTCC have consequently appealed to drivers, transport owners, station masters and commuters to remain calm while the consultation process is underway.
“We wish to assure the general public that engagement will soon commence with the Ministry of Transport and the outcome will be communicated in due course,” the statement said.
The two organisations also urged stakeholders in the transport sector and the general public to await the outcome of the discussions before taking any action or implementing changes to transport fares.
