Five-Year-Old Girl Dies After Falling Into Uncovered Manhole in Winneba

A five-year-old girl has tragically drowned after falling into an uncovered, water-filled manhole at Ansaful, near the Christ Apostolic Church in Winneba.

The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) said the incident occurred on Thursday, September 3, 2026, and was reported at the Winneba Fire Station by the child’s father, Francis Zewu, at about 7:57 p.m.

Firefighters Launch Recovery Operation

Following the report, the Winneba Municipal Fire Command dispatched a four-member rescue team led by STNO I Anthony McCarthy at about 8:16 p.m.

The team arrived at the scene around 8:32 p.m. and found relatives and church members gathered around the approximately 12-foot-deep manhole.

According to the GNFS, the manhole was uncovered and had become filled with water, creating a dangerous situation.

Firefighters immediately commenced recovery operations and used a water pump to help facilitate the search.

After approximately 34 minutes of rescue efforts, the team recovered the lifeless body of the young girl from the manhole.

The child’s body was subsequently handed over to the Police at the scene for further action.

The incident has raised concerns about the dangers posed by uncovered manholes, particularly in communities where children may unknowingly approach them.
