GWL begins controlled spillage at Weija Dam as water level nears critical threshold

Ghana Water Ltd (GWL) has begun controlled spillage from the Weija Dam as the water level continues to rise following heavy rainfall across the Densu River catchment area.

The company said on Tuesday, September 8, 2026, that the dam’s water level had reached 45.2 feet, just below its 46-foot threshold.

According to GWL, the controlled release is a precautionary measure intended to protect the dam and manage the increasing volume of water flowing into the reservoir.

The company has, therefore, advised residents in communities downstream of the dam to evacuate immediately to reduce the risk of flooding and other hazards associated with the spillage.

Residents have also been urged to remain alert, follow official evacuation instructions and avoid any activities that could put their lives and property at risk.

GWL has further called on the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), district assemblies, traditional authorities, assembly members, resident associations and other relevant stakeholders to activate precautionary measures and prepare for possible evacuation.

Among the communities identified as potentially at risk are Tetegu, Oblogo, Pambros Salt, Lower McCarthy Hill, Lower Weija, Bojo Beach and Ada Kopey, together with surrounding areas.

GWL said it is closely monitoring developments at the dam and will continue to issue updates as the situation evolves.
