The Ghana Bar Association (GBA) will soon announce its official stance on the newly enacted Tribunals Law once its Legal Committee concludes a comprehensive analysis of the legislation.
GBA President Efua Ghartey announced the review during the 2026/27 Ghana Bar Association Conference in Ada on Monday, September 14.
Legal Scrutiny and Review Framework
Mrs. Ghartey disclosed that the association’s Legal Committee, chaired by Ace Ankomah, is actively evaluating the statute to ensure its provisions align with constitutional standards.
Emphasizing that the Bar will not rush to judgment, she stated that the review will subject the law to rigorous legal examination. The committee’s assessment will specifically evaluate the jurisdiction conferred on the tribunals, the authorities responsible for making appointments, decision-making procedures, fair trial guarantees, operational independence, and the overall necessity of the law in light of Ghana’s historical experience with similar tribunals.
Commitment to Constitutional Governance
The GBA President reassured the public that the Bar remains steadfast in its mandate to hold statutory and governmental institutions accountable to constitutional standards for the common good.
Background and Political Context
The ongoing review follows President John Mahama’s assent to the controversial Tribunals Bill, 2026, in August. The bill was signed into law despite strong resistance from the Parliamentary Minority, organized labor, and former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, who had urged the government to pause the legislative process for broader national consultation.
