The Minority in Parliament has alleged that the driver of the Minister for Sports and Recreation, Kofi Adams, and a secretary at the office of the Ministry’s Chief Director have not returned to Ghana after travelling to the United States for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
According to the Minority, the two were among 431 individuals sponsored by the government to attend the tournament, raising questions about the government’s assertion that all sponsored travellers have since returned to Ghana.
Speaking to journalists after a briefing by the Ministry, Ranking Member of Parliament’s Youth and Sports Committee, Vincent Ekow Assafuah, said the caucus specifically sought clarification from Mr Adams about his driver, identified as Mr Okyere.
Mr Assafuah claimed that the Sports Minister denied knowing anyone by that name, although he reportedly indicated that he could know the individual.
The Minority also alleged that a secretary at the office of the Chief Director, identified as Christie, travelled to the United States under the government’s sponsorship but has yet to return to Ghana.
The caucus is consequently calling on the Sports Minister to publish the names and passport numbers of all 431 government-sponsored travellers to help establish whether they have returned to the country.
“We are asking the Minister to publish all the 431 people, their passport number and their names as to whether these people actually returned back to Ghana or not,” Mr Assafuah said.
He further questioned the government’s claim that all 431 sponsored travellers had returned, pointing to the two individuals named by the Minority.
“If the government says that all the 431 people that were sponsored by the government all returned back to Ghana, that cannot be the case,” he said.
