Chief Justice Baffoe-Bonnie Named Chair of New CLET Board

Chief Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie has been appointed Chairperson of the newly constituted 11-member Board of the Council for Legal Education and Training (CLET), as Ghana steps up efforts to reform legal education and professional training.

The board comprises senior members of the judiciary, government officials and academics tasked with providing oversight of legal education and professional training in the country.

Joining the Chief Justice on the board are Supreme Court Justice Gabriel Scott Pwamang, Court of Appeal Justice Jennifer Abena Dadzie and Circuit Court Judge Siran Mahama.

Government representation includes Deputy Attorney-General and Minister for Justice, Dr Justice Srem-Sai, and Deputy Education Minister, Dr Clement Abas Apaak. Prof Augustine Ocloo, Deputy Director-General of the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC), is also a member.

The academic community is represented by Prof Kofi Abotsi, Dean of the UPSA Law School; Prof Peter Atudiwe Atupare, Dean of the University of Ghana School of Law; Prof Cynthia Forson, Deputy Provost of Lancaster University; and Prof Raymond Atuguba, Director-General for Legal Education.

CLET is mandated to oversee legal education and professional legal training in Ghana, including the administration of the Ghana School of Law and other related regulatory responsibilities.

The formation of the new board comes amid ongoing reforms in the country’s legal education system following the passage of the Legal Education Act, which establishes the framework for the organisation and regulation of legal education and professional training in Ghana.
