The management of Metro Mass Transit Limited (MMTL) has ruled out any increase in transport fares despite the recent rise in fuel prices.
The company’s Deputy Managing Director, Dennis Yeboah Twumasi, said management is engaging the Ministry of Transport to secure government support to help sustain the company’s operations.
Mr. Yeboah Twumasi made the disclosure during a media engagement held as part of a visit by Parliament’s Roads and Transport Committee.
He explained that maintaining affordable fares remains central to MMTL’s mandate, making a fare increase unnecessary even amid rising fuel costs.
“Our mandate is to provide affordable transport and so we are not supposed to increase fares even if fuel prices go up. So there is no strategy for us to increase fares. What we need now is to provide more services going into the future,” he said.
Mr. Yeboah Twumasi also revealed that MMTL currently has 418 buses, but only 206 are operational.
He said the company could restore some of the non-operational buses if it receives the necessary financial and logistical support, particularly for the purchase of spare parts.
“We currently have 418 buses but out of that, it is only 206 buses that are operational. We can revive the ones that are down, provided we get the necessary support and assistance to buy spare parts and put them on the road.”
The company is therefore seeking government assistance to repair more of its buses and expand services without increasing fares for passengers.
