The Ashanti Regional branch of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has called for an investigation into an alleged attempt by an officer of the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) to arrest the Member of Parliament for Manhyia South, Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah.
In a statement signed by the Ashanti Regional Secretary, Dr Francis Adomako, the party said the incident occurred at the court premises on Wednesday, September 23, 2026, involving the MP and a woman who identified herself as an EOCO officer.
According to the statement, the officer approached the MP at about 12:00 p.m. and attempted either to serve him with an EOCO invitation or effect his arrest. The party said the incident was captured on video and resulted in confusion and tension at the court premises.
The NPP said the incident was particularly concerning because Mr Baffour Awuah was at the court as counsel for Salomey Baffoe, a nurse and mother of three who remains in police custody, in connection with proceedings relating to her bail application.
The Ashanti Regional NPP described the alleged conduct of the EOCO officer as unlawful and called on the leadership of the institution to investigate the matter and take appropriate action if any wrongdoing is established.
The party also urged EOCO to focus on its mandate and collaborate with other state security agencies in addressing recent cocaine-related cases and seizures involving Ghana.
The NPP further alleged that repeated arrests of its members by EOCO were unconstitutional and described the incident at the court as an alleged attempt at kidnapping. These claims have been made by the party and were not independently established in the statement.
The Ashanti Regional NPP has also called on the Speaker of Parliament to establish a bipartisan committee to investigate the cocaine-related cases, saying it believes actions against its members could divert attention from the issue.
The party said it would pursue lawful and constitutional channels to challenge what it considers unlawful conduct by state institutions.
It also appealed to the National Peace Council, Ghana Bar Association, civil society organisations, religious leaders, traditional authorities and other stakeholders to speak on what it described as violations of citizens’ rights.
