Haruna Iddrisu Orders GES to Submit Promoted Teachers’ Data for Salary Payments

Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu has directed the Director-General of the Ghana Education Service (GES) to submit data on all promoted teachers to the Controller and Accountant-General’s Department by the end of this week.

The directive is aimed at facilitating the payment of salaries and outstanding arrears owed to teachers who have been promoted, with payments expected to begin by October.

The move follows ongoing discussions between the government and striking teacher unions over delays in addressing their concerns.

Mr Iddrisu has also appealed to the unions to call off their industrial action and return to the classroom while the government works to resolve the outstanding issues.

However, the striking teacher unions have rejected the appeal and maintained their decision to continue the strike following their meeting with the Education Minister.

The unions involved are the National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT), the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), and the Pre-Tertiary Teachers Association of Ghana (PRETAG).

The unions have been demanding, among other issues, the payment of outstanding promotion arrears and progress in negotiations over their conditions of service.
