Black Stars suffer 4-2 defeat to The Gambia in AFCON qualifier

Ghana’s Black Stars suffered a 4-2 defeat to The Gambia in their 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier at the Accra Sports Stadium on Tuesday, September 29, 2026.

The result leaves Ghana without a win or a point from their opening two Group C matches, following their 2-0 defeat to Côte d’Ivoire in Bouaké.

Ghana made a strong start and took the lead in the 27th minute when Ernest Nuamah converted a penalty.

Felix Afena-Gyan doubled the advantage six minutes later, curling a free-kick into the net to give the Black Stars a 2-0 lead.

The Gambia pulled one back from the penalty spot after a foul inside Ghana’s box, with Colley making no mistake from the spot.

The visitors then levelled before the break to complete their comeback and send the teams into half-time at 2-2.

The Gambia maintained their momentum after the restart, scoring twice more to secure a 4-2 victory.

The defeat leaves Ghana without a point from their first two qualifying matches and increases the pressure on Carlos Queiroz’s side as they chase one of the two qualification spots available in Group C.

The 2027 AFCON tournament will be jointly hosted by Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda.
