Parliament is set to reconvene today, Tuesday, September 29, 2026, for a one-day emergency sitting following a petition by the Minority Caucus over recent cocaine seizures involving consignments linked to Ghana.
The extraordinary sitting follows the seizure of nearly 3.9 tonnes of cocaine at France’s Port of Dunkirk from a container reportedly shipped from Ghana.
The development has intensified scrutiny of Ghana’s ports, cargo inspection procedures and security measures aimed at preventing the country from being used as a transit point for illicit drugs.
The Minority Caucus, led by First Deputy Minority Whip and Tolon MP Habib Iddrisu, invoked Article 112(3) of the 1992 Constitution to request the emergency sitting.
During the sitting, lawmakers are expected to seek explanations from relevant state institutions about the circumstances surrounding the seizures and Ghana’s role in the movement of the consignments.
Parliament is also expected to examine how the container was processed and cleared for export, which agencies were responsible for inspecting and monitoring the consignment, and whether there were any lapses in Ghana’s customs, port and security systems.
The emergency sitting comes amid growing calls for accountability and stronger coordination among state institutions in the fight against international drug trafficking.
The Minority has also requested clarification on other major narcotics seizures involving consignments linked to Ghana, as lawmakers consider the wider implications for the country’s security and international reputation.
