Ayariga to Require MMDAs to Broadcast Assembly Meetings Live on Local FM Stations

The Minister of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Mahama Ayariga, has announced plans to introduce regulations and directives requiring Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) to broadcast their meetings live on local FM stations.

The initiative is aimed at improving transparency and accountability in local governance while giving residents greater access to assembly proceedings and decisions that affect their communities.

Speaking at a breakfast meeting with development partners, heads of departments and agencies of the Ministry in Accra on Wednesday, September 30, Mr Ayariga said the Ministry would work with local broadcasting stations to ensure that assembly proceedings are accessible to the communities they serve.

He explained that assemblies perform legislative functions at the local level and, therefore, their proceedings should be open and transparent to residents.

“Every assembly meeting, I’m coming out with regulations and directives that say that every assembly meeting must be aired live on the local FM stations because assemblies are local legislative bodies.”

Mr Ayariga said the proceedings of local assemblies should be made as transparent and accessible to residents as those of Ghana’s national Parliament.

According to the Minister, the Ministry is already supporting regional broadcasting stations and intends to leverage these platforms to make local assembly meetings more accessible to the public.

The proposed measure forms part of efforts to strengthen public participation, transparency and accountability within Ghana’s local government system.
