La Dadekotopon NDC Questions Demolition of Structures at Pleasure Beach

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the La Dadekotopon Constituency has questioned the demolition of structures at the La Pleasure Beach area in Accra, saying neither the party nor local authorities were informed ahead of the exercise.

The constituency said it was surprised by the demolition, noting that its preliminary consultations suggested the area was not included in any planned demolition exercise by the Labadi Beach Hotel.

Addressing a press conference, the Member of Parliament for La Dadekotopon, Rita Naa Odoley Sowah, said the exercise resulted in the destruction of businesses and properties belonging to people operating in the area.

“I want to say on authority that the party NDC is not aware of this and is not part of this. The Labadi Beach Hotel and SSNIT, working with the National Security, carried out this exercise,” she said.

The MP said affected businesses and residents should have been given adequate notice to enable them to remove their belongings before the demolition.

She urged affected persons to engage with the constituency leadership as efforts continue to establish the circumstances surrounding the exercise.

Ms Sowah also announced plans for a stakeholder meeting next week involving traditional authorities, the constituency leadership, the Municipal Chief Executive and other relevant stakeholders to determine the way forward.

She stressed that the demolition was not part of the government’s anti-flooding exercise.

According to her, consultations with the government’s anti-flooding team indicated that the Pleasure Beach area had not been identified as a flood-prone location targeted under the exercise.

Ms Sowah assured affected businesses and residents that the constituency would continue engaging the relevant authorities and provide further information following the stakeholder meeting.
