Health Minister Kwabena Mintah Akandoh says coverage under the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) has risen from 57 per cent to approximately 70 per cent in less than two years.
Speaking at the Ministry of Health’s Sector Update Engagement in Accra on Wednesday, October 7, the Minister linked the growth partly to the government’s decision to uncap the National Health Insurance Levy.
According to Mr Akandoh, the move has provided the NHIS with increased financial resources to expand its coverage and support healthcare delivery.
“We’re strengthening what we have come to meet. We took the NHIS from 57%; as I speak to you now, it’s about 70%. In a matter of less than two years,” he said.
He disclosed that funding for the health insurance scheme increased from approximately GH¢6.5 billion in 2024 to GH¢9.8 billion in 2025 following the policy change.
The Minister further revealed that government has increased payments to healthcare providers by an average of 50 per cent.
He explained that the adjustment is aimed at addressing delays in the payment of claims submitted by healthcare providers while ensuring that patients have improved access to healthcare services.
Mr Akandoh said the measures form part of efforts to strengthen the NHIS and improve the delivery of healthcare across the country.
