Ato Forson Urges Public Officials to Account for Every Cedi

Finance Minister Dr Cassiel Ato Forson has called on public officials to strengthen financial accountability and ensure that every cedi entrusted to them is properly accounted for, warning against making the recovery of public funds an annual routine.

He made the appeal during an engagement on the Auditor-General’s Report, which brought together regional ministers and metropolitan, municipal and district chief executives (MMDCEs).

Dr Ato Forson reminded the officials that they were custodians of the country’s resources and were expected to manage public funds in the best interests of citizens.

“Public money does not belong to government officials; we are only the custodians of those resources,” he said, emphasising that the funds belonged to the people of Ghana.

He urged public officials to take decisive steps to retrieve all recoverable monies and ensure accountability for every cedi under their supervision.

“Let us recover every cedi that is recoverable. Let us account for every cedi that is entrusted to us as public officials,” he stated.

The Finance Minister, however, stressed that efforts to promote accountability should go beyond recovering misappropriated or unaccounted-for funds.

He called for stronger financial management systems and preventive measures to protect public resources and reduce recurring financial irregularities.

“Let us build systems where recovery becomes the exception, not an annual ritual,” he said.
