The National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, popularly known as General Mosquito, has decided not to seek re-election, fuelling speculation about a possible bid for the party’s flagbearership in 2027.
Nominations for the party’s national executive positions closed on Wednesday, October 21, 2026, with 137 aspirants picking up nomination forms to contest various positions.
According to GraphicOnline sources, five aspirants are expected to contest the national chairmanship position, which will become vacant following Mr Asiedu Nketiah’s decision to step down after serving one term.
The contenders are former Odododiodio MP Edwin Nii Lante Vanderpuye; former Greater Accra Regional Minister Nii Armah Ashietey; former NDC National Chairman Samuel Ofosu Ampofo; National Vice Chairman Sofo Azorka; and former Minister of Local Government Akwasi Opong-Fosu.
Mr Ofosu Ampofo’s nomination forms were picked up by some party members.
As the contest for the NDC’s national executive positions gathers momentum, Mr Asiedu Nketiah’s decision not to seek another term has intensified speculation about his possible presidential ambitions ahead of the party’s next flagbearership contest in 2027.
However, no formal announcement of a flagbearership bid by Mr Asiedu Nketiah was contained in the information available.
