The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has announced plans to undertake a nationwide meter audit aimed at reducing commercial losses, strengthening revenue assurance and addressing electricity theft.
The exercise will cover all ECG operational areas across the country, with inspections focusing on prepaid and postpaid meters, Special Load Tariff (SLT) installations and their associated wiring.
In a statement, the company said the audit is intended to assess the integrity of electricity metering systems and ensure that power consumption is accurately measured and billed.
ECG has urged customers, landlords, estate managers, facility managers and security personnel not to obstruct or delay authorised field officers who visit their premises because they have not received individual notification letters.
According to the company, its public announcement constitutes official notice of the exercise, meaning no additional prior notices or appointment letters will be issued.
However, ECG has advised the public to take precautionary measures by verifying the identities of personnel before allowing them onto their properties.
The company said all employees and authorised agents involved in the audit would carry official identification cards to facilitate verification.
Customers can confirm the identities of field officers by calling the ECG Customer Call Centre on 0302 611 611 or using the *226# USSD service, which is accessible on all mobile networks.
To verify an officer through the USSD platform, customers should dial *226#, select Option 5 for staff verification and enter the six-digit verification code provided by the officer.
The system will then display the staff member’s full name, region and district, allowing customers to confirm the officer’s identity before granting access.
ECG also referenced Regulation 4(h) of the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (Customer Service) Regulations, 2020 (L.I. 2413), which requires consumers to provide utility employees or authorised agents with safe and reasonable access to their premises.
The company noted that such access is subject to the presentation of verifiable identification and compliance with the provisions of the utility’s customer charter.
ECG has encouraged members of the public who need further clarification about the exercise to contact its customer call centre or reach out through its official social media platforms under the handle @ECGghOfficial.
