TOR Considers Establishing Ultra-Modern Burns and Trauma Centre in Tema – Edmond Kombat

The Managing Director of the Tema Oil Refinery (TOR), Edmond Kombat, has disclosed that the refinery is considering plans to establish an ultra-modern Burns and Trauma Centre in Tema to provide specialised emergency medical care for workers within the industrial enclave.

He said the proposed facility is among several strategic projects being explored by management to strengthen the refinery’s future and address critical needs within the surrounding industrial community.

Speaking at the Government Accountability Series on Monday, October 26, Kombat explained that Tema’s concentration of industrial facilities makes a specialised centre for treating burns and trauma injuries particularly important.

He noted that despite the large number of industries operating in the area, there is currently no hospital specifically equipped to provide specialised treatment for burns and trauma cases resulting from industrial accidents.

“We’re also looking at a number of strategic projects at the refinery to make sure that we scale the future of the refinery. One of it is a Burns and Trauma Centre. Tema is an enclave for industries but we don’t have a hospital that is specialised for burns treatment and then trauma,” he said.

Kombat added that TOR has land available for the proposed project and that management, under the direction of the President and the Minister, is considering the development of a modern facility to respond to emergencies involving workers in the area’s industries.

“TOR has land and under the direction of the President and the Minister, we are considering putting an ultra modern Burns and Trauma Centre to be able to treat workers in those industries in case of any emergency,” he stated.

Beyond the proposed medical facility, the TOR Managing Director revealed that the refinery is also exploring plans to develop affordable housing on some of its land to support workers who travel long distances to their workplaces.

According to him, TOR is collaborating with the Home Ownership Fund to explore the possibility of providing affordable residential units for workers and other residents within the Tema industrial enclave.

The proposed initiatives form part of management’s broader efforts to expand the refinery’s contribution to the local economy while addressing healthcare and housing needs within the industrial community.
