Personnel of the National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS) reportedly faced armed resistance from suspected illegal miners during an enforcement operation at Subin Akwaaboso in the Central Region.
The incident happened on Sunday, November 1, 2026, when a team of NAIMOS officers, supported by personnel from the Special Boat Squadron (SBS), entered the community to apprehend individuals suspected of engaging in illegal mining activities.
According to NAIMOS, some individuals at the scene attempted to disrupt the operation, allegedly wielding cutlasses, firearms and other offensive weapons. Their actions reportedly posed a threat to the enforcement officers and other persons present.
In a statement released on Monday, November 2, the Secretariat disclosed that the resistance created significant challenges for the team, which was operating under the leadership of its Director of Operations, Colonel K. S. Appiah.
Despite the situation, NAIMOS said its personnel exercised maximum restraint and took appropriate steps to prevent the incident from escalating.
The Secretariat has warned that attacks on its officers and attempts to obstruct lawful enforcement activities will not be tolerated. It added that individuals suspected of involvement in such acts would be handed over to the appropriate authorities for further action.
NAIMOS also reaffirmed its commitment to carrying out its mandate in accordance with the law, emphasising that necessary and proportionate measures would be taken to ensure the safety of its personnel, accompanying journalists and members of the public.
The Secretariat further pledged to strengthen its collaboration with security agencies, regulatory bodies and local communities, with support from the government and the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources, as part of ongoing efforts to combat illegal mining and safeguard the environment.
